It’s one of Lakeland’s most nostalgic neighborhoods. With Dixieland’s timeless appeal, it’s easy to feel as if you’ve been transported back in time.  This Lakeland community has its own distinct personality and provides something distinctive in comparison to other parts of the county. Fresh, quirky, retro, frugal, artsy, and eclectic are some of the phrases used to define the region. Dixieland is the area for you if you want to live in a location that seems like it might be the setting for a Norman Rockwell picture. Dixieland is a feast of all Lakeland has to offer. You’ve got old standbys like Swift’s Shoe Repair, which has been fixing everything from thrift discoveries to designer Cole Haans for more than 65 years. After a historic site assessment found that the bungalow-style residences in the area were more than 50 years old, the Dixieland neighborhood was designated as a historic site in 1994. The Dixieland region was founded in 1907 when two local real estate entrepreneurs purchased 160 acres between Lake Morton and Lake Hollingsworth. Henry B. Carter and C.W. Carter, the developers, Dixieland was originally described by Deen as “Lakeland’s ‘fashionable suburb.'” Over the years, the neighborhood has changed dramatically, becoming a mix of residential and business establishments. The bungalow architecture was popular during the construction boom from the 1920s through the 1940s, and most of the homes in Dixieland are built in this style. Along with the bungalows, the Mediterranean and Colonial-style homes may be found throughout Dixieland. Dixieland is the place to raise a family for the family-oriented purchaser. Dixieland Elementary received an “A” grade and was designated a 2013 Exceeding Expectations Award School. Dobbins Park is located within walking distance of the school. Three covered picnic spots with tables and grills, a half-mile paved walking route, two playgrounds, basketball and volleyball courts, and a huge playing field are all available in the park. Dixieland is wonderfully placed between Lake Hunter and Lake Hollingsworth for the outdoorsy purchaser. You may watch the Florida Southern ski team practicing in Hollingsworth on any given weekday with local fishermen on pontoon boats. The lake is ringed by a 2.7-mile-long asphalt walking route. Along the lake, there is also a designated bike lane. The Lakeland Runners Club holds many races here each year, as well as monthly runs up and down Dixieland’s hills. There is also has a Lake-to-Lake bike route, which helped it obtain Bronze status as a Bicycle Friendly Community. Dixieland is a wonderful trove of treats for homeowners who are also foodies. Dixieland is the hub of all that can and will be renovated in Lakeland for thrifters and antique collectors. Dixieland Relics’ vintage, repurposed boutique features everything from antique theater seats to terrariums. Events abound in the Dixieland neighborhood if you’re seeking something to do. It hosts a Spring Arts Festival and Last Friday activities every year. Last Friday activities allow local residents and businesses to participate in and celebrate the Dixieland neighborhood by offering deals and longer hours.
