Explorations V Children's Museum

Explorations V Children’s Museum is a fascinating museum with an aim to teach children through discovery and active play, making it ideal for families visiting the Lakeland region. The Museum was built on the belief that children, like adults, utilize all five senses to explore and learn about the world around them, hence the Roman Numeral “V” in the name. The museum is divided into sections based on diverse topics such as music, space, flora and fauna, and science, with all exhibits designed to engage young minds and provide hands-on learning opportunities. This is undoubtedly the place to go with younger guests for an instructive yet enjoyable day out. Krista Yurchik put an ad in the Lakeland Ledger in 1990 inviting individuals interested in founding a children’s museum to meet at the Library. By 1991, they had organized as a 501(c)3 organization and opened its first storefront on Kentucky Ave in downtown Lakeland, with around 20 families attending. The SWANSATION campaign, which brought hundreds of stunning swan sculptures to the city in 1998, earned enough money to buy the historic Kress building from the City of Lakeland and begin renovations for a new facility. Following a capital campaign, the new Museum opened in 2000. To deliver engaging activities, the Museum collaborates with schools, universities, arts & culture organizations, foundations, government, civic groups, people, and companies such as Disney, Publix, United Way, Born Learning, Success by 6 and others. Explorations V Children’s Museum has three levels of kid-powered, hands-on exhibitions and mind-bending arts and scientific events! Many learning ideas may be explored via art and science, liberating the child’s imagination and unleashing the power of play. “O is for Oranges, from seed to Our World” on the Lower Floor connects students to local history and “Our World.” Pick, pack, sort, and slide around this enchanting Florida orange orchard, which transports visitors to Asia, Africa, Australia, and America. The first floor houses “Our Town,” which includes exhibits that teach the fundamentals of music appreciation, art, theater, math, science, and history. The Tot Spot is a fun, comfortable place built exclusively for little ones. A children’s art gallery, interactive science components and brain-teasers, as well as Temporary Exhibits in the Dreamer’s Gallery, are all housed on the second floor. A large blackboard on the wall serves as a blank canvas for bright visual creations. Annual museum admissions average more than 40,000 people, with roughly 20,000 people attending education programs and 40,000 people attending outreach programs, for a total impact of 100,000 people.
